Akhouri History to develop Kursinama

Our family legend regarding our title AKHOURI not surname, includes stories that we are the descendants of a Mahasenapati, Akhouri is a title given by some ruler. We originally belonged to Kashmir and migrated to Gaya, Bihar at some point.

I am trying to confirm these stories, as well as build our Kursinama (Vanshavali) further. Akhouri Anirudh Prasad of Gaya has created a Vanshavali which goes back to almost 16th century.

Any other family legends or details of Akhouri history would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Every "Akhouri"in this world has roots to a village named Churamanpur; 3 KMs away from the district town Buxar in Bihar. Churamanpur got its name after the founder Churaman Singh who fled from some place in northern India (place name unknown). He was spending a life of a normad then. He was a literate person. There was once a theft at the king of Dumraon's palace. Dumraon is 14 KM east of Buxar. The thieves found stolen legal documents useless (though important for State) and threw them in field. When the King and his men were worried about the stolen documents. Churaman Singh found these documents and realized that those were royal documents and asked a passer by if any royal document was lost in the kingdom. the answer was affirmative and then he went to palace and presented these papers. King was very happy and hired him in his royal army. Time passed and with his smart work Churaman Singh had won king's confidence. He was awarded a village and was made the head of 1 lakh soldiers in king's army. A title "Lakhouri" which means a head of lakh soldiers was given; which with virtue of time changed to Akhouri. He was called Lakhouri Churaman Kumar Singh. Akhouris are Kayastha (Srivastava) but also use "Singh" that is used by Rajputs because of the duty that they performed.
I tried telling the story in short but there are many stories of his intelligence because of which he was awarde a title.
    Thanks

    1. Thanks for your input Ashutosh.

According to my research, the word "Kayasth" first appears in the book Rajtarangini. It means a person who works as a scribe in a Kings court. Just like we say doctor or lawyer. A scribe could be a person of any origin who had mastered the languages - Urdu, Farsi, Arabic, Hindi.

I could not find any mention of the title "Lakhouri" given to army personnel. Rather, Lakhouri brick is a term used in Mughal construction as most building were made of more than a lakh bricks, and more than a lakh brick had to be made.

Since, we decendents of Akhouri's are Kayasths or highly educated people, our ancestors could not have been masons or brick kiln owners - just my logic.

  3. Thanks a lot for your inputs. A dedicated website does sound like a very good idea.

Regarding the legend about 1 Lakh soldiers and title given as Lakhouri cannot be substantiated as per my research. NO King ever gave such a title, not during British period, not during Mughal period or before that.

Akhouri Udyant Ray (1750 onwards) Kanungo of Palamu had saved the son (Gopal Ray) of a Chero ruler according to Palamau history. Akhouri Udyant Ray went to Sherghati, from there to Patna.

  14. Hi, My name is Utsav Shashank, I am from Akhouri family, belongs to Churamanpur and was just searching about Akhouri Family History on internet, wherein come across this blog.
As per the history which I know from my family our ancestor Shri Churamani Singh was a member of court in Ruler (Name Unknown) of Kashmir. King was fighting a battle somewhere around 1500 years, and was about to loose it. Churmani Singh gave some advice because of which King won the loosing battle. King was very happy and awarded him Zamindari of 1 lacs village and asked him to settle down anywhere in his kingdom which was from Bengal to Kashmir. Churamani Singh came and settled in a village near historical and mythological city Buxar. The village later named after him as Churamanpur. When he came from Kashmir he had all the castes in his "lav-lashkar" except Rajput as they were also the rulers. Still there is no Rajput family living in this village. The house which was built around 500 years ago was constructed of materials like surkhi chuna and lahouri bricks. I am glad to say that I still live in the same house. I can share the photos and videos of the house which itself enough to tell it's story. Please let me know how to connect. Would love to share as much as I can and yes the idea of website is wonderful. Also I have the family tree starting Shri Churamani Singh till my generation.
    Please share how to connect.

  17. Nobody can definetly tell the origin.. But the story of churamani singh is what I have heard.. And I believe the surname existed prior to churamani shingh.. Somewhere I read the true roots are in gaya itself.. Churamanpur is where I belong too...

    1. If only we knew the name of the King, the riddle about origin of AKHOURI would be solved. We would have actual date and timeline. Unfortunately, no one knows the name of the king.
